Shailesh Chandra to Take Over as MD & CEO of Tata Motors from October 2025

Tata Motors, one of India’s largest automotive manufacturers and a global player in mobility solutions, has announced the appointment of Shailesh Chandra as its new Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, effective October 1, 2025.

Mr. Chandra, a Tata Motors veteran with more than two decades of experience within the Tata Group, succeeds in this role at a pivotal time for the company, as the automotive industry undergoes rapid transformation driven by electrification, sustainability and digital innovation.

A Proven Leader in Passenger Vehicles and EVs

Shailesh Chandra has been instrumental in reshaping Tata Motors’ passenger vehicle (PV) and electric mobility businesses. As Managing Director of Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles Limited and Tata Passenger Electric Mobility Limited, he led the company to become a market leader in the Indian EV space. Under his leadership, Tata Motors launched popular electric models such as the Nexon EV, Tigor EV and the Tiago EV, which collectively helped the company capture over 70% of India’s EV market share.

Mr. Chandra also oversaw the company’s renewed success in the passenger vehicle segment, driving Tata Motors to consistently rank among the top three carmakers in India in terms of sales. His ability to blend innovation with customer-centric strategies has been credited with reviving the brand’s image in a highly competitive market.

Rich Experience Across Tata Group

Before taking charge of the PV and EV divisions, Mr. Chandra held senior leadership roles within Tata Motors, including President of the Passenger Vehicles Business Unit and President of Electric Mobility Business & Corporate Strategy. His contributions were not limited to automobiles, during his tenure at Tata Sons Limited, he worked closely with the Group Strategy team and the Chairman’s Office on long-term growth initiatives and transformation projects across the Tata conglomerate.

Earlier in his career, he worked across diverse functions at Tata Motors including corporate strategy, defense vehicle marketing, vendor development and production management, giving him a well-rounded perspective on the business.

His elevation comes at a time when the global auto industry is at an inflection point. Stricter emission norms, a global push toward electrification and evolving consumer preferences are redefining how automakers operate. For Tata Motors, which has already taken a leadership position in EVs and is actively expanding its global footprint, the next decade will be about scaling innovation, strengthening exports and embedding sustainability into its core operations.

With India emerging as one of the fastest-growing automotive markets and Tata Motors playing a critical role in both passenger and commercial vehicle segments. His expertise is expected to drive the next phase of growth, spanning electrification, connected mobility and international expansion.
