LIC Elevates Shri Ramakrishnan Chander as Managing Director

Life Insurance Corporation of India (LIC) announced the elevation of Shri Ramakrishnan Chander to the position of Managing Director effective December 1, 2025, following a formal notification issued by the Government of India. The appointment marks a significant milestone in a career spanning more than three decades with India’s largest life insurer.

Chander joined LIC in 1990 as an Assistant Administrative Officer and has since held leadership roles across the organisation’s core verticals. His earlier responsibilities included serving as Senior Divisional Manager, Regional Manager for Marketing and Pension & Group Schemes, and later as Executive Director of LIC’s Strategic Business Unit overseeing International Operations. His assignments reflect a broad-based operational background and deep exposure to LIC’s domestic and global business segments.

Before assuming charge as Managing Director, Chander served as LIC’s Chief Investment Officer (CIO) and Executive Director of the Investment Front Office Department. In this role, he managed one of the country’s largest investment portfolios, steering capital allocation strategies and contributing to the corporation’s financial performance. His leadership strengthened investment returns and supported LIC’s objective of delivering sustained value to policyholders. His tenure also coincided with key market transitions where LIC continued to play a stabilising role in India’s financial ecosystem.

An alumnus with a Graduate degree in Science, Chander also holds a Post Graduate Diploma in Financial Management and is a Fellow of the Insurance Institute of India. His professional profile blends technical expertise with strategic oversight, underpinned by strong institutional knowledge of LIC’s business model, distribution footprint, and investment architecture.

At a time when India’s insurance industry is undergoing rapid digital transformation and heightened competition, LIC’s leadership transition signals continuity with a focus on strengthening product innovation, enhancing customer engagement, and modernising operations. Chander’s experience across investment management, pensions, group schemes and international markets is expected to support LIC’s ongoing efforts to expand its digital capabilities and reinforce its position as a dominant life insurer.

His elevation continues LIC’s tradition of fostering leadership from within the organisation, reflecting a commitment to long-term talent development and institutional stability.

From a risk-management standpoint, Chander’s deep investment stewardship and multi-vertical exposure equip LIC to navigate an increasingly volatile macro environment, strengthening its ability to balance capital protection, market-linked growth and long-term policyholder security in an era of tightening regulatory expectations and evolving systemic risks.
