Cholamandalam MS General Insurance (Chola MS) has announced a key leadership transition, appointing Rajive Kumaraswami as Managing Director Designate effective April 22, 2026. He is set to take over as Managing Director and CEO from June 1, 2026, succeeding V. Suryanarayanan, who will retire at the end of May after a long and impactful tenure.
Suryanarayanan’s association with Chola MS spans over two decades, during which he played a central role in shaping the company’s growth trajectory. His leadership saw the organisation expand its product offerings, strengthen distribution networks, and deepen its technology integration. Equally significant was his focus on building strong internal teams and reinforcing governance frameworks, positioning the company for long-term stability in a competitive insurance landscape.
Kumaraswami steps into the role with a diverse and well-rounded background across insurance, reinsurance and finance. Most recently, he served as Managing Director and CEO of Magma General Insurance, where he led business transformation and operational scaling efforts.
His professional journey began at ICICI Limited in project finance, followed by a key role at ICICI Lombard General Insurance. He also served as Chief Representative for the Indian subcontinent at SCOR SE, one of the world’s leading reinsurers, giving him global exposure to risk management and underwriting practices.
An alumnus of the University of Delhi, Kumaraswami is a Fellow Member of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India and an Associate Member of the Institute of Cost Accountants of India, reflecting a strong foundation in financial and analytical disciplines.
The transition comes at a time when the insurance sector is undergoing rapid evolution, driven by regulatory changes, digital adoption and shifting customer expectations. With Kumaraswami’s blend of domestic and international experience, Chola MS is expected to continue strengthening its market position while adapting to emerging industry dynamics.
From a risk awareness perspective, Rajive Kumaraswami’s extensive experience across insurance, reinsurance and finance, spanning institutions such as ICICI Lombard, SCOR SE and Magma General Insurance, brings a deeply institutional understanding of underwriting discipline, global risk dynamics and financial rigour. His leadership is therefore expected to ensure continuity in governance while strengthening Chola MS’s ability to navigate evolving regulatory landscapes with resilience and strategic clarity.
